The Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index: How to Use It

February 15, 2026 · 5 min read

The Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index measures market sentiment on a scale from 0 to 100. Below 25 is extreme fear. Above 75 is extreme greed. It combines volatility, market volume, social media sentiment, surveys, Bitcoin dominance, and Google Trends data into a single number.

The index is a contrarian indicator. When it reads extreme fear, historically that has been a better time to buy. When it reads extreme greed, historically that has been a better time to take profits — or at least stop adding.

0 100 EXTREME FEAR EXTREME GREED March 2020 COVID Score: 8 Oct 2025 ATH Score: 94 "Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful."

During the COVID crash in March 2020, the index hit 8. Bitcoin was around $5,000. Within 18 months it was above $60,000. That’s what extreme fear looks like in hindsight — the best buying opportunity in years.

During Bitcoin’s all-time high in October 2025, the index was above 90. Bitcoin was $126K. Within months it was below $70K. Extreme greed preceded one of the sharpest corrections in Bitcoin’s history.

Key pattern: Every time the Fear and Greed Index has stayed below 20 for more than a week, Bitcoin’s price was higher 12 months later — without exception. Fear creates opportunity.

The index doesn’t predict specific prices. It tells you how emotional the market is. Emotional markets overshoot in both directions. They fall further than fundamentals justify during fear and rise further than fundamentals justify during greed.

Using this with DCA is powerful. Keep your regular weekly buy going always. But when the index hits extreme fear (below 20), consider buying extra. When it hits extreme greed (above 80), consider pausing extra purchases and just maintaining your regular DCA.

You don’t need to time the market. But you can tilt the odds in your favor by paying attention to sentiment. The crowd is almost always wrong at the extremes. Use that to your advantage.
